Beloved

Oil on panel, mirror, ribbon, glitter, 12” x 24,” 30.48 cm x 60.96 cm, 2013

A work which honors a daughter’s memory of her mother who commissioned the artwork as gift for her grieving father. The work began with a two hour conversation with his daughter. The conversation was a vital part of the portrait, memorable to both her and the artist. Afterwards she left behind a single black and white photograph, the only evidence of her mother besides her memory. Chaussette painted her mother’s portrait in soft blues using oil paint to blur her beauty in the same way that Hollywood cinematographers often coated the camera’s lens when filming starlets like Jean Harlow and Bette Davis.

Each time her father gazes at his wife’s portrait, he will see his reflection in the mirror with the word, “Beloved “ reminding him that he himself is now the container of his wife’s loving memory.
