Shinjinrui, or New Breed
Japanese pilgrim’s bamboo hat or Ohenro, gesso, oil, 17” x 7,” 43.18 cm x 17.78 cm, Japan, 1988
This objet trouvé was among the objects salvaged the night before a friend’s home near Kobe was demolished. It is one of a series of objects that became the “canvases” for works. These act as commentary on an ever-changing Japan, the perfect juxtaposition of traditional customs and modern ideas that coexist in Japan. “Shinjinrui'' is Japanese for “the new breed” of young people. The beautiful and stark design recalls a Edo period ceramic bowl on display during a month living as a home stay with a young Japanese priest and his pregnant wife.
